Checklist of Breastfeeding Supplies
While most moms don't need anything to breastfeed their babies successfully, there are many products that can make breastfeeding more convenient, comfortable and satisfying.
Basics:
Nursing bras : 2-3 before birth, 3-6 later (at least 1 softcup or non-structured) Nursing bras work hard to support milk-heavy breasts and tend to get soiled so are washed more often that your regular bras. Having extras on hand means not having to wash as often and can lengthen the life of the bras you have. Buy some bras before baby is born so you'll have something to start with, then get more of your favorites later.
Bra pads : 3-5 pair washable, or 1 package disposable Many moms choose to have both washable and reusable pads on hand: washable for at home and disposable for on the road.
Breastfeeding book : A day or night resource for all your breastfeeding questions.
Nursing gown or pyjamas : 1-2 Allows easy access for nighttime nursing.
Nursing tops : 2-3 Hidden nursing openings allow access to breast without unbuttoning or lifting up your entire shirt. Allows for more discreet nursing in public.
Nursing dresses : 1-2
For comfort:
Ultrapure Lanolin : 1 tube 100% pure lanolin does not have to be washed off before feeding baby. Some moms get several smaller tubes so they can keep in several convenient places. Purelan and Lansinoh are 100% ultrapure lanolin.
Hydrogel pads for sore nipples: Pads designed to promote healing and provide cooling relief. A must have if dealing with cracked and bleeding nipples.
Breastfeeding Pillow: Helps raise baby to proper nursing level.
Nursing Stool : Raises legs to relieve stress on back and helps raise baby to proper nursing position.
